Cloud Lovers Unite!
8th Jul 2020
The other day on a walk through the neighborhood, I was marveling at the bluebird skies and the beginning of the Sesame Street song started to play in my head. "Sunny days, chasing the clouds away..." I didn't really want the clouds to fly away. Even though I love the clear, bright sky, I do have a fascination with clouds. There is something inherently calming watching them change shape and slide across the sky. For those of you who have a similar infatuation, we have some unique gifts at the shop that may inspire your curiosity.
One of my favorite podcasts features a segment with Gavin Pretor-Pinney, the founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society. (Yes, this is totally a thing!) He spoke of the wonder of the ever-changing tapestry of the skies and how important it is to take a moment to slow down to enjoy the passing clouds whenever we can. Luckily, we each have access to the sky so there isn't anywhere special that we have to travel to see them. After listening to his talk no less than 847 times, I was pretty pumped when we started carrying his book A Cloud a Day in the shop. This book has 365 different skies featured in stunning photographs, plus easily-digestible scientific information for how the different clouds form--everything from cumulus clouds which capture our imaginations with their ever-changing formations, to lacunosus clouds that look like soap suds, and everything in between. A Cloud a Day also features the historical significance and cultural relevance of our atmospheric friends. This isn't just a pretty coffee table book. It is a love letter to the sky.
We pride ourselves with having truly unique gifts here at Serendipity, and the Storm Cloud definitely fits the bill. This storm glass has a specialized liquid inside that crystallizes to indicate changes in the weather. We have one on display in the shop, and it's fun to see how the crystals inside change and where they form in the glass depending on what the weather is doing outside. The Storm Cloud isn't as accurate as a barometer, but it is certainly a novel way to keep track of the elements.
And last but not least, who doesn't feel an affection for clouds after watching The Joy of Painting? Bob Ross liked to begin his paintings by adding in his happy little clouds, and he'd often add in another so that they'd have a friend in their home in the sky. For the guys and gals who have the same affection for Bob Ross and his happy little clouds, we have the perfect socks for you! These crew socks come in either men's or women's sizes.
All of these items are available either in our brick-and-mortar store in Nashville or online. We ship anywhere in the US so if you have a cloud-lover in your life, we're happy to ship it off to wherever you or they call home. And wherever you are, I hope you are taking a moment to bask in the glory of the natural world!
Cheers!
